Belarusian man kept in Ukraine jail for alleged espionage denies accusations

Belarusians, who was detained in June in Ukraine on suspicion of spying, will be kept in Chernihiv detention center until the end of November. The man denies any wrongdoing.

He was detained in Ukraine on 16 June. He is suspected of committing a crime under Article 114 of the Criminal Code (espionage), namely “the collecting state secret data in order to transfer it to a foreign state, committed by foreigner.” He faces up to 15 years in prison. It is still unknown, however, in favor of which state he is suspected of committing this crime.

Representatives of the Belarusian embassy regularly visit the man in the Chernihiv jail, where he has been held since June. The detainee is from Minsk, he is 32 years old. In addition to representatives of the Embassy, in jail the man is visited by his mother and a lawyer appointed by the Ukrainian side.

It was not for the first time that the man from Minsk arrived in Ukraine in June, he had been there before with friends and acquaintances. During his latest visit, the man was trying to get a job in the logistics firm in Chernihiv. There he was detained. The man denies the accusations.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported last week that the situation with the detention of Belarusian man raises questions about the appropriateness and legality of the Ukrainian side’s actions.
