Belarus not to ally with West against Russia – Lukashenka

Belarus has no intention to ally with the West against Russia, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Thursday’s meeting with Ukrainian journalists in Minsk.

According to Lukashenka, in contacts with the United States, he has repeatedly atressed that Belarus should not be compelled to make choice between East and West.

This is our position. We will make our own decisions regarding our relations with Russia and China on the one hand, and the EU and the United States on the other. U.S. officials, even high-ranking ones, have always been okay with that. On the contrary, some pre-empted my condition before the negotiations by publicly stating that they were not setting this condition for Belarus, that they wanted Belarus to work for the benefit of peace and tranquility in Eastern Europe. They said they want to see Belarus sovereign and independent,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.

A week ago, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale said that the United States and Belarus would restore diplomatic missions to the ambassadorial level. For over a decade, the embassies of the two countries have been headed by сharges d’affaires.

Following the meeting with the Belarusian leader, the top US official reiterated that they were not asking Belarus to choose between East and West.
