For about the past decade, Belarus has been repeatedly faulted for ‘drifting toward the West’, Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey in the run-up to Tuesday’s counter-terrorism conference.
The minister made the comment when asked by journalists about the recent visit of US National Security Adviser John R. Bolton. According to him, the Belarusian side was eager to hear out the top official’s opinion on the situation in the region and discuss prospects for the further development.
“Two crucial things – sovereignty and neutrality – are set in our country’s information security concept. We will decisively be on guard of our information security to the extent it is possible, because nowadays technology is developing very rapidly. We are not going to meddle in other states’ affairs, i.e. elections and other political events,” Makey stressed.
The issue of Belarusian and American ambassadors’ returning to the two countries is still on the table, he added.
Last Thursday, John Bolton met with President Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Minsk. It is the first time in the past 25 years that a US official of such top level has come to Belarus.
