Almost 1.5K Ukrainians contracted measles last week


The outbreak of the infectious disease was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

From May 7 to May 13, in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Kyiv, Lviv, Luhansk, Rivne and Chernihiv regions, as well as in Kyiv, 1,407 cases were recorded (651 of them are adults).

Since the beginning of the year, 15,261 people (6,243 – adults) caught measles in Ukraine. During this time, two adults and six children died from this infectious disease.

In mid-March, an outbreak of measles occurred in Vaukavysk, Belarus. Several people also contracted measles in the Homiel, Brest regions and in Minsk (1 person). According to the Ministry of Health of Belarus, in 80% of the cases the patients were not vaccinated. As of the end of April, 44 cases of measles have been officially registered in Belarus.

In early May, an outbreak of measles, but in smaller scales than in Ukraine, occurred in the Czech Republic.

According to experts, the risk of measles epidemic is very low, if 95% of the population were vaccinated.
