Anti-European trolls attack Belarusian car website from Russia

The Belarusian car portal av.by has recently survived an unusual troll attack.

The network of accounts that were involved in promoting anti-European ideas has been disclosed, Dzmitry Heranin, Av.by Director General, said on Facebook.

“On the night of January 5-6, the most interesting attack over its history started under our report about [Mitsubishi] Outlander. The scheme worked as follows: in their comments, dozens of users from different accounts stated that the car compared poorly to its European countertypes; these fake accounts entangled ordinary people in the dispute and ratcheted up their rhetoric; each thread had a final accord, e.g. the issue of Syria, refugees in Europe, ‘Merkel should resign’, and general messages like Europe is hell on earth,” he said.

Proven IP addresses (accounts of several users were registered to each) were indicative of the localization in St. Petersburg (in some cases – in China), which prompts suggestions that a proxy server was used.

“And each of the commentators swears blind that he is a true Belarusian who loves his native country and hates Europe (where he lived, worked and gained negative experience).

The removal greatly upset our friends from St. Petersburg, because it became clear that no one would pay for the deleted comments. As a result, av.by was bombarded with threats and insults. According to the, we are a**holes who do not like Belarus which is on such friendly terms with Vova [Vladimir Putin],” Heranin stressed.
